Animal Cruelty vs. Gambling: Which Do I Give Less of a Shit About?

by

Professional sports are going through a rough patch. Tim Donaghy, an NBA referee, just pleaded guilty to felony charges of conspiracy and gambling. He gave inside information to bettors and went so far as to bet on games he was reffing. Donaghy faces up to 25 years in prison. Meanwhile, Michael Vick, the immensely talented but underperforming quarterback for the Atlanta Falcons, has been charged with sponsoring dog fights. He’s currently working on a plea bargain that will land him no more than a year in jail, but if it falls through he could face up to 6 years. We’ll see what kind of punishment Barry Bonds gets for using HGH and then lying to a jury about it.

Pumping steroids, dogfighting, illegal gambling — these sound like the national pastimes of most countries in the EU. So I don’t get why the US is so infatuated with dishing out immensely harsh penalties for them.

Let’s be honest: our government is hypocritical when it comes to gambling. It’s illegal, unless you’re an American Indian. Or you’re on a boat. Or you live in any of 15 states that allow it. Or, as is the case with the Lotto, the government is taking advantage of you directly. Then it’s fine.

As for dogfighting, it’s like the poor black urban version of Dungeons & Dragons. You give your dog all sorts of potions (read: cocaine) to enhance its performance. If you win, your dog gets (along with crazy XP) to rape the other dog’s bitches. If you lose, you have to drown your dog or something. I dunno, maybe it’s nothing like D&D. But I bet it’s pretty sweet. Besides, there’s no scientific literature showing that dogs are happier sitting around getting obese than they are tearing the shit out of each other.

But in the end, it’s not about condoning gambling or dogfighting. It’s not about showing how ridiculous the national attitude toward gambling is (really ridiculous) or about how lame groups like PETA are (really lame). It’s about looking at those crimes and realizing they’re way too petty to get the jail sentences — and the media coverage — that they do.

Sure, these guys have damaged the reputation of the NBA and the NFL, so if you want them out of those sports, fine. But sports should exist outside and beneath the “real world.” The fact that even now the Senate is conducting an investigation on steroids in baseball is the perfect symbol for our distorted national priorites are.

As a side note, when is this guy going to die?:

Vick’s crime is serious and he will do jail time. Tim Donaghy’s crime is serious and he should do jail time too. Steroids in baseball is Bud Selig’s fault. I have stories on all these topics on my blog.

This is exactly my point. People love sports so much that they lose sight of what’s actually important. Vick and Donaghy hurt the repuations of sports, so sports lovers like yourselves flip out. Fuck!!! They should do jail time!!!!

Take a deep breath and look again. Tim Donaghy’s job was to judge when people getting paid to play a game pushed each other too hard or when people stood in the same place too long. His crime was to unfairly help people earn thousands of dollars betting on games.

In the grand scheme of things, it’s not a big deal. I’m not saying people don’t care, I’m just saying people shouldn’t care.

Wow, not only a faux-feminist, but a faux-feminist who tramples on tribal self-determination! Wonderful.

  4. Confused... Says:

Ah, yes, another so-called feminist who cares little for the suffering of animals, or the off-the-cuff dismissal of Native American tribal sovreignty.

    Refreshing…I think.
    Not really.
About as feminist as a fucking corset.

Their is nothing wrong with gambling but their is definately something wrong with animal cruelty. When you start gambling on animal fights where these animals are subjected to extreme pain or death for your own pleasure, than you have a serious problem.

  6. animallover Says:

IM british .. but to me- Ayone who can do animal testing or cruelty deserves to do time, or be punished..

who gives them the right to treat animals like that..

and if they think they can do it to animals – sure we could do it to them back.

and drugs.. well dont get me started.. if you need drugs – u cleary need look around you and get help.. cos drugs aint worth it.. there’s more to life!

  7. Alex Ann Says:

I agree with Jerry. There is nothing wrong with gambling (as long as you don’t have an addiction to it). But the animal cruelty thing; I have see my male dogs fight before, and it ripped my heart out when I though I couldn’t stop them. In addition, the statement made about it being like black D&D, is just coming from a person that really needs to be put in the losing dogs place in the fight, & then tell me what they think about the whole thing.

  8. Shelby Says:

oh wow you are one sick person…. animal abuse is a serious crime..
PETA is a great organization created to keep disturbed people like you away from animals. those people who chose to abuse animals should be put into the same conditions that their animals were in and they should suffer as much pain and aganoy as the poor defenseless anmial did. its because of people like you that there even have to be laws against anmial curelty. every disgusting low life who tortures an animal should see the inside of a jail cell. inicent animals’ lives are more important than a football statistic. dont get me wrong i love football just as much as the next person… but what vick did was wrong and he should be locked up for it.

  9. Ashley Says:

gambling is another topic but animal cruelty is definatly an issue..animals feel pain as well as you and i do, animals scream and run when they are scared and no animal deserves to be subjected to the abuses of fighting…an animal is innocent when it is born. it is the PERSON who turns them in to a monster…

Yeah whoever wrote this “article” is a tool, basically put your a sick fuck who needs a life besides blogging on the internet.

  11. jerifghrtuyht Says:

this is appaling. would you like it if you were forced to fight to death? and if you didnt die, you would be drowned anyway? dont you care about any other life form? you think your so superior, when really you dont mean anything to anyone whatsoever. burn in hell.

  12. coney Says:

once i found a dog with its throt slit i tookit tomy house and cald 911 the next day i t went to the wspa

  13. estefanie Says:

YOU GUYS THAT SUPPORT ANIMAL ABUSE ARE FUCKING STUPID. HOW THE HELL DO YOU GUYS THINK THATS RIGHT? YOU GUYS ARE FUCKING STUPID AND FUCKING DESERVE TO DIE AND GO TO HELL. I HONESTLY CANT BELIVE THAT MOTHERFUCKERS LIKE YOU LIVE. ANIMALS HAVE FEELINGS TOO. WHY WOULD SOMEONE WANT TO GAMBLE ON A LIFE OF A POOR INNOCENT ANIMAL? I MEAN COME ON! THATS FUCKING WRONG. I DONT EVEN KNOW WHAT TO SAY NO MORE THAN YOU GUYS ARE GONNA PAY FUCKERS….

  14. tasia styles Says:

that is not a way for anybody to treat a dog or any kind of other animal. no if they don’t give him a long enough time in jail, then what will be the reason for him going to jail at all. and even if you beleive wether people gives a fuck or not….well im one of many that do regaurdless if you’re in the one of little who don’t. some people actually enjoy having dogs and other pets around but they are not for killing, making them figh, etc.. so for further more dogs deserve owns/friends who are going to take good, healthy care of them
